What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentists and treatments are generally there to support a better appearance for your teeth and gums. These treatments are not classed as a necessity to improve your overall oral health, but more so you get a smile makeover and improve how they look. If you have a particular problem you want to fix, a dentist can outline a cosmetic treatment plan for you.

What is Considered Cosmetic Dentistry?

There is a range of treatments that are classed as cosmetic and will improve the look of your smile. This includes:

Can Any Dental Practice do Cosmetic Treatments?

Any dentist can administer cosmetic treatments, however, it may not be in their best interest to do so. Not every practice will focus on cosmetic treatments, so it’s best you do your research beforehand.

The training that every dentist has to go through is the same, so they are all qualified with the correct certifications and licenses, but if they don’t have a cosmetic list, it’s not a priority area for them.

How Much Do Cosmetic Dentist Treatments Cost?

The cost of treatments is very subjective to the individual practice or dentist. This generally takes a lot of factors into consideration such as their specialisms, years of experience, the practice location and the cost of the materials.

What Happens at a Cosmetic Appointment?

An appointment will be a collaborative process between yourself and the dentist, as you are seeking out the treatment to get a desirable finish for you. Your chosen dentist will be able to suggest the best solutions for you and work out a treatment plan you’re both happy with to move forward with.

There’s also the check-up side of it. You will need to have a full examination of your current teeth (most commonly including x-rays) too to see if the treatment is suitable and identify any problems. By doing this, you can be reassured of the current state of your teeth and the effectiveness of the treatment.

Are Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry Treatments the same?

The simple answer is no, they are not the same. Cosmetic is purely to make the look of the teeth, gums and overall smile better or to achieve a certain result. Restorative dentistry is to fix damaged, broken, or missing teeth to get them to a healthier state. This is to fix serious oral issues causing pain or fixing damage to prevent further problems. A dentist will want to restore your teeth, so you can have a fully functioning bite again, and therefore becomes a necessity rather than a want.
