Mouth Cancer Action Month – 1st – 30th November

Most people have heard of cancer affecting parts of the body such as lungs or breasts. However, cancer can also occur in the mouth, where the disease can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks and throat.

Anyone can be affected by mouth cancer, whether they have their own teeth or not and sadly more than 1,800 people in the UK lose their life to mouth cancer every year.

Mouth cancer can often be spotted in its early stages by a dentist during a thorough mouth examination. If mouth cancer is recognised early, then the chances of a cure are good. Many people with mouth cancer go to their dentist too late.

As a dentist, we will examine the inside of your mouth and tongue with the help of a small mirror. We can see parts of your mouth that you cannot see easily yourself.

Mouth Cancer can appear in different forms and can affect all parts of the mouth, tongue and lips. It can appear as a painless mouth ulcer that does not heal normally. A white or red patch in the mouth can also develop into cancer, as can any unusual lumps or swellings.

Be mouth aware and look for changes in your mouth

It is important to visit a dentist if these areas do not heal within three weeks.

If anything is found during this examination, then you will be referred to a consultant at Rotherham hospital.

Be safe, not sorry.
