Wisdom teeth are located at the very back of your mouth (molars). They don’t start growing until you are around 17 years old and finish growing around your mid 20’s.
There are many reasons you may need to have your wisdom teeth removed such as problems with growth. They may get trapped or grow at a funny angle causing painful swelling and infection.
You also may not have enough room in your jaw for these large teeth to come through causing other teeth to move.
This is when your dentist may recommend wisdom tooth removal.
If you are particularly nervous about the procedure talk to your Dentist who will be able to discuss the option of IV sedation with you.
You will be given a local anaesthetic which numbs the area so you won’t feel a thing.
If the tooth is still under the gum a small cut will be made to expose the wisdom tooth.
The tooth will then be manipulated until it lifts out.
You will feel some pressure but no pain during the procedure.
Dissolvable stitches will be used to close the gum, which will dissolve within 7-10 days.
Once the Dentist is happy for you to do so, you will be able to drive home following the procedure.
Depending on how many wisdom teeth you are having removed the procedure can take up to 45 minutes. Should there be any complications during surgery such as a stubborn tooth the procedure could take longer.
You will experience swelling and mild discomfort for up to 3 days after the surgery and it can take up to 2 weeks for the area to fully heal after wisdom tooth removal surgery.
You should be able to return to work the day after the procedure.
If you are experiencing problems with your wisdom teeth book a consultation at Green Square Dental who will be able to advise if removal is the best option for you.
